How Does Stress Affect Your Health?

Let’s talk about something this week that hits very close to home for the vast majority of people these days – stress.  Most people know that stress is bad and that you need to try not to “do” it but very few know exactly how bad it is, what all it affects or how to get rid of it or at least get rid of the negative stress.  Yes, there is “positive” stress.  One example of positive stress is exercise. 

Exercise puts stress on the muscles and the result is that it makes the muscles stronger – if it’s the right type of exercise and it’s done in the correct amounts. As a matter of fact, research shows that, in most cases, the correct type of exercise and in the correct amounts will help relieve mental stress and produce a higher level of health in your body and mind. 

The opposite result can be obtained as well however. Almost everybody knows that you can do the wrong kind of exercise (or do an exercise incorrectly) and potentially damage your muscles, tendons, ligaments and joints.  Similarly, you can do too much exercise with the same disastrous results. 

Well, it’s the same situation with mental stress.  Positive mental stress would be learning new, desirable information.  This typically has the effect of making you feel smarter, more confident and generally gives you a more optimistic outlook.  In turn, your immune system and the other physiological systems produce more optimistic results in your body! 

Most people however have far too little of the positive mental stress and far, far too much of the negative mental stresses such as worry, anxiety, frustration, fear, anger and the list goes on and on.  That is the stress that we are referring to this week.
